Artist's Comments

This is a project I submitted for my Intermedia Class. Our assignment was essentially to do a documentary type of project and here we have it. It's technically a statement about the need for social and political reformation in the Philippines.

Here is the actual artist statement I submitted with the project:
Growing up in a land of opportunity and freedom, many of us can't even fathom the idea of one day leaving our homeland and never coming back. It is a concept that can be hard to grasp for those of us born and raised in the United States, but in the Philippines, this thought has become a way of life. Despite the pahetic efforts at reformation, the Philippines still remains a place where the only ones who have any say are the ones who can afford to do so. Since the lower-cass has no social or financial power to voice thier opinions they choose to face each day with a sense of acceptance, and with the hope that one day they will be granted the opportunity to leave the country. Laban o Takbo literally means "To Fight or Run Away." This peice is an illustrated interpretation of the decisions that is made to either stay and fight for a reformation or to seek out a new life in another country.

I was nervous when I submitted this in front of the class. Unfortunately I didn't get much of a reaction...and I was like O_o' well nothing bad was said about it. LOL, they did like my use of color and they said my perspective is right on...however...I'd want to give my own critic. Those who know me from CAC [nudge nudge] will know I can deffinately come up with something more dynamic. I agree, this came across as boring to me, but to be honest I was in "get it done" mode. Visually speaking, if I had more time I could come up with something way more interesting and the truth is I am disappointed on how this came out. I based the pose on a picture from another artist here on DA

His peice is way more visually interesting and gets he point across more effectively, so check him out!

Aww, Inoshi! You submitted something to dA finally! :glomp:

From all you told me of this project, man.... you did way better than what I could've done. Really, yes, I do think you could've come up with something more dynamic, but I can sympathize with you on this one. *isn't good with dynamics nor giving meaning to pictures* :XD: But, dynamics aside, technically, it's a really nicely done picture. Anne would be proud of your values. ;) Shading skin's always tricky, but you have really nice tones to it, and the shadows look pretty realistic! And though the whole meaning behind this picture's not blatent, it's there.

:XD: All I gotta say is I'm glad Anne never gave us assignments like this. It would've killed me. x_x And you know, if you're ever in need of brainstorming, I'll try my bestest to help out. :XD:

So, bottom line after this novel-length comment: technically, very well done, great color choices, and nice pose. Could be more dynamic, and the meaning could be a little more blatent, but all together, I think you did a good job. ^____^ And I'm especially happy to see you making art once again! :#1:

LOL I miss you! Did you know ASU's art building is condemed? I just found that out and went O____o' Yes, I agree it needs to be more exciting, but I kicked but in presentation [thumbs up] whoohoo. I admit, if he would have let me stuck to my orginal idea, then it would have been far more interesting [nod nod]

Nice one! The shading is amazing @___@ TEACH ME! TEACH ME! :excited:

The problem with such dark, defining lines is what happens when you mix it with coloring that tries to make it as realistic as possible. . . I've noticed this before with other images of mine. :XP: Point is, while I can tell you did an excellent drawing, the coloring kind of clashes with the lines. It's still emotionally moving, though, well. . . not that much for me. . . but I don't react well anyways. :P

I kind of want to color this myself. Do you still have the lineart so I can play with it? :D

Hehehe sorry I don't have the line art any more. But you are right! I didn't even thing about that [looks at picture] I think a cell shading type of coloring would have been more appropriate for this type of line art. Ah I have so much to learn about lines...lol it's hard to find descent tutorials for it too. But I'll try playing with the line art style more for the next one [grins]
:iconinoshi-kun:
lol well thank you! As for teaching you, I'm really not that good...but I did give raenstrife a link to a tutorial that kinda helped me out here and there before ^^

I'm going to have to use the print facility on campus for my next print project, the colors looked really good on yours.

PS. reciprocating the devwatch, thanks for the add!

Hey no problem! Yeah the print station on campus isn't half bad...they offer both glossy and matte finishes. Personally, to me Glossy gives a more vibrant color.
:icondragonslover1:
Well the other option is that I take it as it is and see what I can do with it. . . Do I have your permission?
